Details of the Joint Operation

Data from the Austrian news outlet, Heute.at, indicates that the deportations were coordinated as a joint effort, primarily organized by Germany. The operation received support from Austria, Luxembourg, and Hungary.

Of the 41 individuals flown to West Africa on a charter flight between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the breakdown is as follows:

• 29 Nigerians deported from Germany
• 3 Nigerians deported from Austria
• 2 Nigerians deported from Luxembourg
• 1 Nigerian deported from Hungary

Additionally, five Ghanaians and one Gambian were reported to be on the flight, which had Lagos, Nigeria, and Accra, Ghana, as its primary destinations.

Official Stance on Deportation

One of the Nigerian nationals deported from Austria had previously faced conviction for drug-related offenses.

Gerhard Karner, Austria’s Interior Minister, emphasized the government’s commitment to its current migration policy. "The negative net migration is being continued through a consistent deportation policy," Karner stated. "Never before have so many illegal residents and criminal offenders been removed from the country by Austrian authorities as in the first half of this year. We will continue on this necessary path undeterred."
